I'll hand you straight over the WDR...

The Junior Academy in Ostbevern: (07.57 clock)

"Around 50 talented young people from all NRW currently taking part in a holiday-Akademie in Ostbevern. You live and learn for nine days at the boarding school, Schloss Loburg. How can you pack an egg so that it can withstand a fall from the third floor balcony? Tasks like these are solved by the students of the Junior Academy in Ostbevern. They explore and experiment with mathematical or scientific subjects - and all in English too. These are projects for which the school day usually does not have time for. In the boarding school in Ostbevern the gifted are among themselves, and can learn at their own pace. The eighth and ninth graders, from all over NRW, were selected by their schools for the Academy. Support the the Junior Academy comes from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia."

Dispatches from the Minions...

The second full day of the academy!
In the morning session of our group we started with searching after interesting structures in nature that inspire us and noticed, that every plant and even leaf is a little wonder with its optimized form.

After that we got to know little Eggbertina. She is, as you can notice because of the name, is a little adventurous egg, that wants to fly over the “Zone of Doom”, and therefore we need to build constructions, with which Eggbertina can fly over this zone.

We are going to start on a 6 meter high balcony, and it has to fly/glide three meters. For the rest of the time we searched in the internet after nature-inspired flying techniques and thought about problems that occurred with flying about the “Zone of Doom”, nature`s solutions for them and how we could abstract this solutions, to build our own constructions.

Suddenly there were more much more problems than the ones we have thought of!

After the lunch and a break we continued with working on our constructions. After some time we stopped and told the rest of the group shortly about our solutions for the problems, we apparently all shared. Four groups build a mixture of a dandelion-inspired parachute and a straight construction like the flying squirrel. One group built a plane shaped like the wings of an eagle, which really looked very good. I think we are going to know, which technique is the best.  And finally we tested our first prototypes that flew more or less great. But tomorrow we will continue working on them!

We´re doing some internet research for our Eggbertina challenge.
Every group tries to construct the best flight device.
Our first prototypes were constructed.
Our first challenge: we have to let Eggbertina fly.
